Jackie and Shadow are a pair of bald eagles near Big Bear whose habitat is threatened by a proposed 50-lot subdivision of luxury homes and a 55-slip marina, to be built less than a mile from their nest.
For the last four years, I’ve watched their nest cam with awe. I’ve seen them build and repair their nest, take turns incubating their eggs, and raise their young from hatchlings all the way to first flight.
Most inspiring of all was Jackie’s steadfast dedication to her clutch despite being near-buried in a blizzard. Bald eagles mate for life, and females are larger than males. They make high pitched chirps — not the shrieks portrayed in films (The sound you think they make is a dubbed red tailed hawk shriek)
As apex predators, healthy eagles are a bellwether of a healthy environment. If Jackie and Shadow thrive, so do all the creatures of Big Bear — including us!
The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust (SBMLT) and the developer have entered into a limited agreement for SBMLT to purchase Moon Camp for $10M and permanently conserve it. They’re nearly halfway to their goal.
